The Slavia Café is located on the ground floor of the Lažanský Palace, which stands on the corner of today’s Národní třída and Smetana Embankment. It is one of the last palace buildings. As early as 1881, the Prague tradesman Václav Zoufalý began to run a café here. He created a new entrance to the large café room and named the café Velká Slávie. At the beginning of the 20th century, the builder Jan E. Deport made a new Art Nouveau portal of the café. The biggest modifications were made as part of the reconstruction in the 1930s by Josef Hukal, when, among other things, large glass windows were installed in the café. In 1983, a general reconstruction of the café took place (architects Jan Fišer and Ivo Los). The now legendary Slavia Café has achieved extraordinary fame thanks to the famous personalities who have come and continue to come here. For example, Jiří Grossmann wrote short stories here, Jaroslav Seifert wrote poems, Václav Havel gathers strength and energy here! And meeting representatives from the ranks of actors from the opposite National Theatre has probably always been, is and will always be possible.
