The history of the Warsaw Zoo dates back to the 17th century, when there were menageries open to the public. The Warsaw Zoo itself was founded in 1928 and covered an area of 12 hectares. About 500 animals were bred here. Between 1930 and 1939, exotic animals were brought here. In 1937, the zoo managed to breed the Indian elephant. In 1939, it was enlarged to an area of 32 hectares and was one of the largest zoos in Europe at that time. During World War 2, the Warsaw Zoo was damaged and several animals died. After the war in 1946, the zoo was reopened. At that time, it had 150 animals.
Today’s Warsaw Zoo covers an area of 40 hectares and you will find 5000 animals (500 species) here. The animals are divided into several exhibitions. There are refreshments, the possibility of a train ride and there is also a so-called zoo hour for children, where they can learn about the life of animals.
