Poděbrady is a spa town located in the Elbe Lowland in the middle of friendly nature on both banks of the Elbe. The spa park, which stretches from the bus and railway station towards Jiřího Square and part of which has recently undergone extensive reconstruction, attracts visitors to visit.
The attention of visitors will certainly not miss the equestrian monument of King George by the sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch. However, the dominant feature of the town is the castle. Its predecessor, an early Gothic water castle, stood here as early as the 13th century. Today, everyone is greeted by the entrance gate from the 16th century with the coat of arms of the imperial eagle and the emblems of the Czech and Hungarian kingdoms. In the second courtyard of the castle, the King George Memorial with many historical attractions and a lapidarium in the castle cellar is accessible. Through the Na Kladdení alley, you can walk to the building of the Elbe Museum with many rich collections. The neighboring provost’s church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is worth a visit. The Miner’s Church, which those interested can find on the way to the Poděbrady Riding School, has its charm.
The discoveries of mineral carbonic springs gave rise to the establishment of a spa, known in the Czech Republic and abroad for its specialization in the treatment of heart and vascular diseases. Today, the almost hundred-year-old tradition continues Lázně Poděbrady a.s. From the thirties of the last century comes the well-known and still valid slogan “Poděbrady is on the heart”.
