In 1213, Přemysl Otakar I donated the Broumov promontory to the Benedictines from Prague-Břevnov. In 1260, Přemysl Otakar II confirmed their ownership. The administration and protection of the property was provided from the Broumov fortress, which was built for this purpose. Soon after 1300, during the reign of Abbot Bavor (1290 – 1322), a Benedictine provostship was established in Broumov. Since the original fortress was burned down by rebellious bailiffs, a monastery with a Gothic church dedicated to St. Adalbert was built in its place. A brewery founded in 1348 was also part of the monastery estates.
The young robber Lotrando, who studied at the Broumov monastery and intends to pass on all the knowledge and interesting facts he has learned, will appear as a guide during this special tour. During the tour, many surprises await you. In the form of an interactive and entertaining one-hour game, you will get to know the mysterious Broumov monastery and solve a mysterious riddle. If you manage to solve the historical mystery, you will receive one of the ten keys from Lotrand that opens the so-called “Thirteenth Chamber”. Anyone who collects at least seven of the ten keys in the castles and chateaux involved in the Open the 13th Chamber project (Grabštejn Castle, Kost, Silesian Ostrava Castle, Loučeň Chateau, Děčín, Chlumec nad Cidlinou, Kačina, Kozel, Slatiňany) will be able to visit it.
You can look forward to an unusual experience during which you will engage all your senses. “Every day I carefully check the chambers and corners of the monastery so that everything is in the right place. I look forward to everyone I meet. I really want not only children but also adults to enjoy tours with me. I hope that visitors will like the Broumov monastery as much as I do and will come back to the monastery to see me,” says the young robber Lotrando himself.
A certain relief of the situation was brought only in 1968, when, thanks to political changes, the sisters were able to start serving in charity homes. Only the Dominican sisters remained in Broumov, who baked hosts for all parishes in Bohemia and Moravia. However, in 1990 they moved to women’s monasteries in Moravia.
The monastery is currently an independent entity and is not populated by a religious community. The abbey is administered from Prague – Břevnov (administrator is P. Prokop Siostrzonek OSB) and the administrator of the monastery is Přemysl Sochor.
