The most important religious building in Zaragoza is the Basilica del Pilar, with its four bell towers, eleven domes, and a relief of the Virgin Mary standing on a column in the center of the façade, where you would normally expect an entrance.
According to legend, it was built by St. James, who spread Christianity in Spain after the resurrection of Jesus, but was not particularly successful. During the prayer, the Virgin Mary appeared to him with a column and told him to build a temple and place the column (pillar – hence the pillar) in the altar.
Zaragoza is Spain’s fifth largest city, the capital of Aragon. It is located in the northeast of the country, in a strategic position about halfway between Barcelona and Madrid. Its population exceeds 700 thousand inhabitants.
