An extremely important monument and landscape landmark of the city. It is the largest Baroque church in the Czech Republic built outside of Prague. It was built in the years 1750 – 1775 according to the plans of the most important Baroque builder K.I. Dientzenhofer. On the main altar of the church there is a painting of Our Lady of Sorrows, which was recognized by the church as miraculous in 1711. It was the hundreds of thousands of pilgrimage processions to this image that were the reason for the construction of a new, larger pilgrimage church.
The Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was declared a national cultural monument in 2008 by a decree of the Government of the Czech Republic. Detailed information about the history and architecture can be found in the “Guide to the Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Přeštice” by Mr. Jan Nepomuk Mrkvička, information about the interior of the church can be found in the publication “A small guide to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Přeštice”, which was published in 2009 by the Association for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in the Přeštice Region. Both printed materials can be purchased at the Information Centre of the Cultural and Community Centre Přeštice or at the House of History of the Přeštice Region.
