Ostrava Zoo – Pavilion of Evolution

Zoos and theme parks Coin no. 419

In the Evolution Pavilion, you can uncover evolution using the example of life in West Africa. The modern breeding complex has become home to more than 200 animals. Among them are mammals, birds, reptiles, nostrils, fish, but also representatives of invertebrates.

The atmosphere of the rainforest is underlined by the rich planting of plants, a gurgling waterfall and a pond with a volume of 30,000 l. The animals can be observed from various places, the upper floor also evokes a view of primates from the tree floor, where these animals stay most of the day. From the outdoor terrace, you can also see the nearby enclosure of African ungulates.

The entire exhibition is complemented by information panels and signs. A number of interactive educational elements present the evolutionary context and interesting facts about the animals bred (different shapes of birds’ beaks, inflatable fish, the development of insects and their species diversity, the adaptation of animals to extreme conditions, etc.). There is also a skeleton of a chimpanzee and a model of Lucy (including a model of her skeleton) – the most famous early hominid Australopithecus afarensis.

The entire pavilion is wheelchair accessible, including a toilet and a changing corner. An elevator is available for visitors with reduced mobility and with baby strollers. On the upper floor you will find a seating area and the possibility of small refreshments. In the immediate vicinity of the pavilion there is a new U Lucy Snack Bar and a children’s playground.
