Boskovice Castle

On the border of Malá Haná and the Drahanská Highlands, at an altitude of 460 meters above sea level, there is a romantic ruin of the Gothic-Renaissance Boskovice Castle.

The castle was used and gradually rebuilt from the 2nd half of the 13th to the beginning of the 18th century. During that time, several noble families took turns in its possession and contemporary building styles in its architecture. In the initial period, the building was built in the contours of the early Gothic style (advanced 13th century, the lords of Boskovice), the climax (around 1400, lords of Kunštát) and late Gothic reconstructions (2nd half of the 15th century, the Černohorský of Boskovice) were essential. The face of the castle was changed to a certain extent by the Renaissance (2nd half of the 16th – 1st half of the 17th century, the Zástřizls), although it did not erase many of its Gothic features. Over time, a picturesque mixture of building styles was created above Boskovice, combined into a single building, which stands on the border of the castle and the chateau as we understand these terms today. Other styles supplemented the castle complex only with individual new buildings, from the Baroque period comes an unfinished courtyard (with stables) in front of the western front of the castle (about the beginning of the 18th century), from the 19th century comes the building of the so-called coroptvárna.

At present, the castle is owned by the Mensdorff – Pouilly family. The massive ruins offer an impressive view of the surrounding landscape. A technical unique is a wooden pedal wheel, drawing water from a 26-meter-deep well. To this day, the complete outer fortification circuit with bastions, the very well-preserved remains of a two-storey palace and a number of impressive details, such as stonemasonry coats of arms or inscriptions, have been preserved from the castle.
