Basilica of St. Peter and Paul

Religious monuments Coin no. 194
The Chapter Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad in its present form is a three-nave pseudo-basilica with chapels at the side aisles, a deep, three-sided chancel with a sacristy and a chapel on the sides. On the sides of the façade there are two towers. The facades of the church have a demanding neo-Gothic finish. The façade with portals and towers is richly modified.
The chapter basilica of Vyšehrad was founded by Prince Vratislav II in 1070, and in 1129 it was expanded. During the repairs after the fire in 1249, the Romanesque essence of the building probably disappeared for the most part and it was replaced by a Gothic three-nave – the remains of the then modification have been preserved in the attic of the side aisles. In 1295, a vestibule was built, probably in the western part, the remains of which were demolished in 1888. In 1369, as part of the modifications of Vyšehrad by Charles IV, the early Gothic building was altered – probably a side chapel was added. In 1495, after repairs, the basilica was reconsecrated. In 1575, Oldřich Avostalis and Master Benedict carried out the vaulting – probably in the main nave. Baroque modifications of the basilica took place in the years 1708-1711, later in the period 1723-1730. F. K. Kaňka initially participated in the modifications concerning the new vaulting and the façade. Around 1740, the so-called “Šancov Chapel” was built. In the period from 1885 to 1903, the basilica was re-Gothic in three stages – the presbytery was extended, the sacristy and depository were established, the Baroque main nave was re-Gothized, which was vaulted again. The construction was carried out according to the plans of the architect Josef Mocker. In the last stage of the construction, a new two-tower façade was introduced.
The painting of the presbytery and the Šancov Chapel comes from the Viennese painter Karel Jobst. The main and side aisles were decorated with paintings by Karel Jobst and the side aisles by Prof. František Urban and his wife Marie.
In 1988-94, the interior of the church was expensively restored. In 2003, Pope John Paul II elevated the Vyšehrad Chapter Church to the papal “Basilica Minor”
