The Romanesque castle in Peñíscola is an art-historical monument from the 13th century. It was built by the Knights of Tempe on the remains of an old Moorish fortress. In 1411, the then pope had the castle rebuilt into a palace, including a pontificate library. Since 1931, it has been a historical monument.
