Rabí Castle

Castles Coin no. 152
The largest castle ruin in Bohemia is Rabí Castle. It is one of the buildings with a rich architectural past, as it has undergone a number of reconstructions and expansions. The oldest part of the castle from the period after 1300 is a massive prismatic tower with a narrow fence and an external fence. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, other residential and farm buildings were built, the castle was fortified by a second bailey. In the last construction phase, an extensive artillery fortification with bastions was built. Although this fortification circuit remained unfinished, it is one of the most advanced defense systems in Central Europe for its time. In 1420, the castle was conquered by Jan Žižka and in 1421 the Hussite hetman lost his second eye during the siege. In the castle hall there is an exhibition of medieval tiles with a replica of a late Gothic tiled stove and archaeological finds from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
