Točník Castle

Castles Coin no. 373
The ruins of the castle on Zámecká hora (inhabited as early as the Hallstatt period) at the upper end of a rocky rib, at the lower end of which stands Žebrák Castle. The castles are located above the village of Točník, near the town of Žebrák. The construction of Točník Castle in such close proximity to the lower Žebrák Castle created the most majestic and still the best preserved fortified settlement in Bohemia.
Točník Castle was founded less than 500 m from the lower Žebrák Castle, due to the fire of this castle in 1395, during the reign of Wenceslas IV, who had it built by the court ironworks as a representative seat and a safe haven. After Wenceslas’ death (1419), King Sigismund took everything precious from Točník. In 1421, the castle was pledged and since then the pledgers have often changed. Since 1953, the castle has been the property of the state. Točník Castle is an excellent example of advanced medieval architectural art, intertwined with elements of later building modifications, e.g. the sgraffito decoration of the burgrave’s palace. One of the remarkable details is the stone coat of arms gallery forming the titulature of Wenceslas IV. In 2004, a small exhibition of the typology of castle architecture was opened in the premises of the former sacristy.
