The originally early Gothic church building was built in the middle of the 13th century on the site of a Romanesque basilica. The church was destroyed by fire twice. During the Hussite storms in 1420, when the entire area was also looted, and in 1503. In the 17th century, it was probably modified in the Baroque style by Carlo Lurago. So it happened that the church became only a shadow of an earlier ancient building. Only the façade and two lowered towers remained from its Gothic past.
It is the towers on the west side, 32 m high, that are counted among the so-called piece towers. Originally, they were taller, but after the fires they were lowered. The strong prismatic towers made of carefully worked marl blocks are covered with pyramidal roofs and have their original Gothic windows bricked up. The towers are supported by massive corner pillars.
