Ossuary Sedlec – Kutná Hora

Religious monuments Coin no. 088

A unique ossuary under the Church of All Saints at the cemetery in Sedlec near Kutná Hora. Originally, it was a cemetery church. In 1278, Abbot Jindřich was sent  to Jerusalem in the Holy Land and he brought a handful of clay from Mount Calvary, which he scattered around the local cemetery. The cemetery gained the reputation of the Holy Land and then people were buried here not only from the surrounding area, but also from abroad. The decoration consists almost exclusively of human bones, the remains of a total of about 40,000 people, the remains of plague epidemics and the Hussite wars. The greatest attractions: a massive chandelier, chalices, a cross, a monstrance or the Schwarzenberg coat of arms.
