Svatá Chýše

Religious monuments Coin no. 181
With the laying of the foundation stone of the Holy Hut on June 3, 1626, the history of the entire pilgrimage site began. The first patron and founder of Loreto was Benigna Catherine of Lobkowicz, and Loreto remained under Lobkowicz’s patronage until the beginning of the 20th century. The appearance of the place gradually changed during the 17th – 18th centuries, the interiors were partially modified in the 19th century, in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, a new treasury was built, open to the public. The pilgrimage site is conceived as a closed complex of buildings around the central Holy Hut, with a rectangular two-storey arcaded courtyard. Today’s Church of the Nativity  and two of the chapels  were only shallow niches with altars in the original layout from the 60s of the 17th century. As the fame of Loreto increased, its attendance grew and it was necessary to enlarge the liturgical spaces of the pilgrimage site. Therefore, larger rectangular chapels were gradually built in the corners of the courtyard, subsequently both chapels on the transverse axis were enlarged and the Chapel of the Nativity was rebuilt into a spacious church in several stages.
