National Memorial on Vítkov Hill

Locks Coin no. 252
The memorial was built as the National Liberation Memorial in 1929 – 1938 in honour of the Czechoslovak legionnaires; it was modified and supplemented again after the end of World War II, because it was necessary to commemorate the second anti-fascist resistance.
After 1948, it began to serve the state ideology and to promote the regime. Important representatives of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia were buried here. In 1953, the Mausoleum of Klement Gottwald was established here. The memorial gradually began to fall into oblivion. After 1989, all those buried were taken away from here, but a specific use was sought for a long time.
In 2001, the National Memorial on Vítkov came under the administration of the National Museum, which began to prepare its reconstruction and rehabilitation.
After more than two years of reconstruction, the memorial was opened to the public on 29.10.2009
