Nové Město na Moravě is located in the southern part of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The PLA was declared in 1970 and covers an area of 709 km² at altitudes from 490 to 836.3 m (the highest peak of the Nine Rocks). It is the source area of many rivers, through which the main European watershed between the North and Black Seas passes. One of the typical landscape elements in this area are gneiss rock formations, which were created by frost weathering on the forested peaks of the Žďár Hills, such as Malinská Rock, Dráteničky, Čtyř palice, Pasecká or Lisovská Rock. Above Nové Město there is also the largest ski slope in the Vysočina Region – the Harusův kopec ski slope. The ski slope is artificially snowed and illuminated during the season.
