The Peace Mound is a historically unique war memorial – with a peaceful mission. It is not dedicated to heroic winners or brave losers, but was built in honour of all the victims of the legendary Battle of Austerlitz on 2.12.1805. This happened at the beginning of the 20th century according to the intention of the priest A. Slovák as a fulfilment of his idea to make the centre of the former battlefield a reverent “place of light”, a memento of wars. The Mound of Peace is the dominant feature and natural centre of the protected monument zone of the Austerlitz Battlefield. Every year at the turn of November and December, a commemorative act to honour the fallen takes place in the memorial area as the culmination of commemorative events on the anniversary of the battle.
In the renovated museum building adjacent to the memorial, visitors can see the multimedia exhibition “The Battle of the Three Emperors. Austerlitz 1805”. This exhibition is conceived in an unconventional way and brings lessons and a strong unusual experience. It conceives the military campaign of 1805, which culminated in the Battle of Austerlitz, as a historical event, but also as a living historical phenomenon. The exhibition presents not only the famous French victory, the military and political glory of the time, but also its reverse.
