Eggenberg Brewery

Restaurants and breweries Coin no. 261

The tradition of brewing beer in Český Krumlov dates back to the very beginnings of the town. The flourishing of brewing occurred during the reign of the last Rosenbergs. In 1560, a new brewery was built in the forecourt and later the regent Jakub Krčín introduced harmless, high-quality water here, the source of which the brewery uses to brew beer to this day.
In 1662, the Eggenbergs acquired the entire Český Krumlov estate and with it the brewery. The increasing consumption of beer was the reason that the once widowed residence of Anna of Roggendorf, mother of Wilhelm and Petr Vok von Rosenberg, which was taken over in 1594 for the construction of the Rosenberg armoury, was rebuilt in 1625 – 30 by the Český Krumlov burgher Václav Vlach into the new buildings of today’s brewery.
In 1945, the brewery was expropriated by the state and was incorporated together with Budweiser Budvar into the national enterprise South Bohemian Breweries. The new development of the brewery occurred after privatization in 1991, when new modern technology was installed and capacity was increased. The Eggenberg brand very quickly became known to consumers and gained popularity not only in the region, but also on foreign beer markets.
