Mikulov Regional Museum

Museums Coin no. 046

The seat of the Regional Museum is the impressive Mikulov Castle, towering over the picturesque town located on the road between Brno and Vienna. The Moravian-Austrian border was guarded by a medieval castle, founded by the Czech king Otakar Přemysl I. The owners of the estate, the Liechtensteins and the Dietrichsteins, gradually rebuilt their residence according to the requirements of the time until its current Baroque elegance.

In its interiors, visitors have the opportunity to see a number of exhibitions divided into four circuits as well as attractive seasonal exhibitions. The historical tour presents the history of the castle and the aristocratic Dietrichstein family. The modern archaeological exhibition Romans and Germans in the Region below Pálava was also awarded by the Minister of Culture for its concept. The exhibition of traditional winemaking is also exceptional, which, in addition to a giant barrel, presents a number of unique items from the museum’s extensive collections. For a long time, the museum has been researching the history of Jews and Jewish culture, which is the subject of an exhibition in the synagogue.
