Restaurant U Pinkasu

Restaurants and breweries Coin no. 023

In 1843, the tailor Jakub Pinkas heard about the beer that had just begun to be brewed in the Burghers’ Brewery in Pilsen. On April 8, 1843, the foreman Martin Salzmann brought him two buckets of this new Pilsner beer. Jakub Pinkas was so enchanted by the beauty and interest of the new Pilsner beer that he soon hung up his tailoring business, became an innkeeper and thus established the tradition of the most famous Old Bohemian pub U Pinkasů. In the second half of the 19th century, U Pinkas became the center of Czech patriotism, where famous politicians and giants of our history František Palacký, František Ladislav Rieger, Josef Jungmann, T.G. Masaryk and many others met. In the memorial book from the 1930s and 1940s, we can find the signature of the papal prelate Barnabas, the autographs of the actors Zdeněk Štěpánek, Ladislav Pešek, Voskovec and Werich, Jaroslav Ježek, and the writer František Langr. From more recent history, we must remember the writer Bohumil Hrabal.

Currently, the restaurant is owned by Adria-Neptun. Its business plan is to build on the glorious history of tapping Pilsner beer U Pinkasů and create a pleasant environment for all those who like good beer and classic Czech gastronomy. Pilsner Urquell will therefore be tapped here for the third century and the dispenser will certainly build on the volumes achieved before the reconstruction. As the sources state, guests drank around six thousand hectolitres here in a year. The reason for such sales was simple. Someone came to the Pinkas for one or two, but the record holders counted their daily doses at tens of pints. The record of the pub is over a hundred pints in a single day.
