Silesian-Ostrava Castle

Castles Coin no. 073

The castle is located at the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers. The first written evidence of its existence dates back to 1297. The original two-storey palace building has a protective fortification system and a defensive tower. In 1548, the castle underwent a Renaissance reconstruction into a chateau. In the years 1714 – 1945, the castle was owned by the Wilczeks of Dobrá Zemice. Since the 30s of the 20th century, it has remained uninhabited. From 1945 to 1992 it was state property. Now it is the property of the city of Ostrava and is one of its important tourist attractions. It has been open since May 14, 2004. The castle is a world technical unique, as it sank by 17 meters due to coal mining.
