Spanish Synagogue

Religious monuments Coin no. 034

The Spanish Synagogue is part of the Jewish Museum in Prague. In 1868, it was built in the Moorish style according to the project of Vojtěch Ignác Ullman on the site of the oldest Jewish house of prayer in Prague called the “Old School”. The synagogue has a central square floor plan with a dome above the central space. On three sides, galleries are built in on metal structures open to the main nave. Stucco arabesque and stylized oriental motifs are repeated on the walls and in the carved decoration of the doors, railings and gallery. The coloured stained glass windows and interior decoration according to the designs of architects A. Baum and B. Münzberger were completed in 1893. In the years 1836-45, František Škroup, the composer of the Czech national anthem, worked as an organist in the synagogue, on the site of which the current building was built in 1868.
