Červená Lhota Castle

Locks Coin no. 177

One of the most romantically located monuments in Bohemia is the South Bohemian water castle Červená Lhota. It grows on a rock, which became a small island due to the damming of the valley and the rise of the water level. The yeoman fortress was bought in 1530 by Jan Kába of Rybňany and soon after he rebuilt it into a Renaissance chateau. After 1641, Lhota became the property of the Slavata family, lords of nearby Jindřichův Hradec. Before the middle of the 19th century, E. J. Schönburg-Hartenstein had the chateau exterior modified in a romantic spirit. At the beginning of the 20th century, the battlements and other neo-Gothic elements disappeared. The architect H. Walcher of Moltheim replaced them with pseudo-Renaissance gables with arches at the top, characteristic of Červená Lhota today. Visitors will enter or look into sixteen very cozy, intimate interiors, telling about life from the Renaissance to the 19th century. A portrait of the “Ugly Duchess” Margaret of Tyrol and Carinthia called “Pyskatá” will remain in the memory, or a memory of the composer Karl Dietters of Diettersdorf. The Men’s Study with Renaissance paintings and works of art from the same period, the Baroque dining room with rich stucco decoration and the charming French Salon furnished in the Second Rococo style will catch your eye.
