Sychrov Castle

Locks Coin no. 062

The Sychrov State Chateau, located in the northeastern part of Bohemia, is one of our most important historicist chateau buildings. Originally a Baroque chateau from 1690-1693, it was built by the knight Lamotte of Frintropp. In 1820, the Rohan family bought the manor from the Wallenstein family. Prince Karel Alain G. Rohan soon had the former Baroque building raised by one floor and initiated other extensions. The most fundamental changes took place during the reign of Kamil Josef I. Rohan in the years 1847-1862, when the chateau acquired its present pseudo-Gothic appearance. Josef Provot participated in it, who followed the architectural designs of his predecessor B. Grueber. All the interior decoration of the chateau was carried out by Czech craftsmen led by the woodcarver Petr Bušek. In 1945, Sychrov was confiscated on the basis of Decree No. 12/1945. From 1.05.1950 it was opened to the public and in 1995, declared a national cultural monument. The tour route contains forty-two interiors with rich carving decorations from the workshop of Petr Bušek. The Rohan Portrait Gallery, which has 248 portraits, is the largest collection of French portrait art in Central Europe. It captures not only members of the Rohan family, but also members of the royal Bourbon dynasty, whose portraits are located in the so-called royal suite. The chateau rooms are complemented by rich collections of porcelain, glass and tin.
