Velké Březno Castle

Locks Coin no. 208
The Velké Březno State Chateau is one of the youngest, smallest, but also the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic. It was built between 1843 and 1845 for the then highest burgrave of the Czech Kingdom, Count Karel Chotek of Chotkov and Vojnín. The original chateau was built in the style of the late Austrian Empire and Chotek’s grandson rebuilt it between 1885 and 1910 in the style of the Romantic Neo-Renaissance. The charming, fully furnished chateau interiors equipped with period furniture will remind you of the life of the aristocratic Chotek family at the end of the 19th century, i.e. at the time when Žofie Chotková, the granddaughter of the founder of the chateau, who later became the wife of the heir to the Habsburg throne Franz Ferdinand d ́Este and who was shot together with him in 1914 during the assassination in Sarajevo, which started the First World War. The chateau is surrounded by a beautiful, unique natural English park in the Ústí nad Labem region with many rare trees and shrubs.

CMQC recommends:
A technical curiosity that you will find during a tour of the castle is a column slide viewer – a stereodiascope. Looking into the eyepieces of the viewer, the illusion of spatial vision is created in the viewer, using an ingenious optical solution – it is a kind of 19th century hologram
